The GardenWorks Project and Downers Grove Junior Woman’s Club kicked off GardenWorks’ tenth growing season on May 15 by installing a new raised bed community garden for Downers Grove FISH Pantry.

Read MoreDOWNERS GROVE, ILLINOIS - The Downers Grove Junior Woman’s Club (DGJWC) announced today, that following the success of this past spring’s Virtual Handmade Market, they will be holding two more virtual events this fall and next spring.
The DGJWC hosted their first virtual Handmade Market show in April 2020 and had over 3,800 website visitors. The transition was made last minute from in-person to virtual due to COVID-19. Cathy Lykins, Co-Chair of the DGJWC Handmade Market said, “We had to quickly pivot from an in-person show to a virtual event in April and were so happy with the success.”

Colleen Schaefer, President of the Downers Grove Juniors Woman’s Club said, “The DGJWC has been very impressed with the work that Reclaim13 is doing locally to end the cycle of sexual exploitation. To support their efforts, DGJWC chose to partner with Reclaim13 for our 2019/2020 club year and donate a portion of our fundraising proceeds to the organization. In the past we have supported Reclaim13 through Therapy Bags and as a Love>Fear 5k Sponsor. We are honored to be in a position to provide this level of donation and look forward to continuing to partner in the future.”

Eli Pfotenhauer – Belmont University, Music Business
Madeleine Spencer – University of Kentucky, Biology (Conservation)
Lily Wenger – University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Biochemistry
These seniors were selected from a recent record number of applicants (approximately 80), all of whom would have been deserving of the scholarship. However, Breit, Goray, Pfotenhauer, Spencer, and Wenger really stood out based on their academic merits, leadership qualities, diverse extracurricular involvements, and – most importantly – volunteerism and commitment to service both within and beyond their community. All of these seniors’ philanthropic spirit aligns with what is at the core of the DGJWC’s mission: supporting others in need.

New early childhood educational items debuted at the library in August and have been a hit among the library’s youngest patrons.

“All of the applicants would have been most worthy of one of the grants. We just wish we had funding to 'grant' all of the applicants' scholarship and resource requests,” said Valerie Hardy, DGJWC Education Committee Co-Chair and Grants Coordinator. “The DGJWC enthusiastically awarded four grants to highly deserving applicants. Each grant awarded aligns well with some of the current key educational pillars of our organization: art, literacy, and social-emotional learning.”
